PREAMBLE

The word “Islam” does not mean ‘Peace’ as it is often said. Rather, it means ‘surrender’ or ‘submission’. Muslims greet each other by saying ‘Salaam alaykum’ meaning ‘peace be upon you’.

Like the majority of followers of other faiths, the majority of Muslims believe in seeking a just and peaceful world. Peace is associated in the Qur’an with God, making it the defining feature of the life intended for humanity, to be fully realized ultimately in the next life.

If most of the followers of a religion are peaceful and law-abiding? Would this make it a religion of peace? Perhaps. But what if a significant minority claim inspiration from the teaching of their religion to commit acts of war and terrorism? What if this minority has a strong claim to be following the example of the founder of their religion? What if this minority can also point to multiple religious authorities and examples through history as setting a precedent for their religious understanding? This is just the case of the extremists who carry-out unpardonable activities such as killing, maiming, destroying of properties, kidnapping, etc in the name of Islam. No! Islam preaches peace and not violence!

BOTTOMLINE

Over the years, the religion of Allah has been seriously wroughted and wrongly taught to people. Lots of unimaginable attributes has been labelled with it giving many people bad impressions about the Abrahamic Faith.

However, as Muslims, the onus lies on us to be careful as we respectfully clear ignorant people’s doubts and show them the true story and nature of al-Islam: the religion of peace!
